Gaji Silk (also spelled Gajji Silk) is a traditional silk fabric unique to Surat, Gujarat. Known for its distinctive crinkled texture and lightweight feel, Gaji Silk has been woven in the Surat region for centuries and is a beloved fabric for Bandhani (tie-dye) work.
At Varni Vastra, Gaji Silk holds a special place in our collection — it represents our Surat heritage and the living weaving traditions of Gujarat.
## What Makes Gaji Silk Unique
Gaji Silk is made from a specific blend of silk and cotton (or sometimes pure silk) that creates a distinctive "crushed" or crinkled surface texture. This isn't a defect — it's the hallmark of authentic Gaji Silk. The crinkle effect:
- Hides minor wrinkles and wear, making it low-maintenance - Creates beautiful light play across the surface - Gives Bandhani tie-dye patterns a three-dimensional depth - Makes the saree drape naturally without stiffness
## Gaji Silk and Bandhani
Gaji Silk and Bandhani are a classic Gujarati combination. The crinkled texture of Gaji Silk holds the tiny knots of Bandhani dyeing beautifully, creating patterns that are uniquely Gujarati. Common patterns include:
- **Shikari** — elaborate figurative designs - **Chundari** — small dots in geometric patterns - **Chandrakala** — crescent moon motifs - **Bavan Baug** — 52 gardens pattern
## How to Identify Authentic Gaji Silk
Authentic Gaji Silk has an unmistakable crinkled texture across the entire fabric (not just in selected areas). It feels lighter than standard silk, has a gentle rustling sound when draped, and the tie-dye patterns (if Bandhani) will show slight irregularities that prove hand-tying.
## Care Instructions
Dry clean for Bandhani Gaji Silk. Plain Gaji Silk can be hand washed in cold water with mild detergent. Never iron flat — the crinkle is meant to stay. Steam gently if needed.
